Wellington, named one of Money Magazine’s “Top 100 Best Places to Live” in 2010, is a smart community with an engaging history. The dream began in the early 50’s with a purchase of 18,000 acres of swampland. Charles Oliver Wellington, along with developer Arthur William “Bink” Glisson started the small community. The Flying Cow Ranch (named for Wellington’s love of aviation and his initials) had less than 100 residents. Wellington now boasts nearly 60,000.
In 1976, William Yilvisaker, chairman of Gould, Inc., bought several tracts of land. His love of polo playing changed the face of the community forever, bringing a legacy of world-renowned equestrian activities. Gould developed Palm Beach Polo & Country Club and the Aero Club, an aviation-themed community. The Ranch continued to be developed until the Village of Wellington was incorporated on December 31, 1995.
Being such a young and vibrant community gave planners ample opportunity to make it, as the motto says, “A Great Hometown.” You’ll find a friendly community filled with a variety of single-family homes, condos and apartments. It offers an assortment of schools, public and private, to meet the needs of any family. There is plenty of fresh retail for the savvy shopper. You might want to start with The Mall at Wellington Greene. After, as you jet about town, you’ll find restaurants that satisfy the most discerning palates. On any given night, you can taste Mexican, Mediterranean, American or Asian, just to name a few.
